History of the Church
Braintree Baptist Church has been in its current building in the town centre since 1833 but historical documents note that there has been a “General Baptist Church since the reign of Charles II”. The membership and activity of the church have naturally fluctuated over this time, with attendance gradually decreasing.
Braintree Baptist Church originally owned much of the land surrounding the building, but this has been gradually sold off piecemeal to various developers and businesses as the town has grown. Therefore, BBC has been reduced to the original chapel, outbuildings (a large and small hall, a large kitchen, two offices and two small classrooms) and a small forecourt. It is now immediately surrounded by various businesses including Sainsbury’s, residential apartments and a row of independent shops.
